The 5-to-1 Balance
The Gottmans found that during conflict, stable couples had about five positive interactions for every negative one. Positive can mean showing interest, a little humor, a nod, empathy, or affection. Negative isn't banned. Complaints and disagreements are part of real life. But negativity hits harder than positivity, so it takes several good moments to balance out one sharp one. In everyday life, outside of arguments, the ratio in happy couples is even higher. If your home feels heavy, you don't have to fix the big problems first. You can start by adding more small positives and watching the mood shift. A quick check: for each complaint or correction today, look for five small positives too, like a smile, a thank-you, interest in their story, or a kind touch. You don't need to count perfectly. The point is noticing how heavy or light the day feels.
Before bed, count roughly how many positive and negative moments you had with your partner today. Add one more positive.
