Read This First: When Trying Harder Is Not the Answer
This app is for couples who are stuck, tired, or drifting, not for anyone who is unsafe. If your partner hits, shoves, threatens, controls your money or phone, cuts you off from friends and family, forces sex, or makes you afraid of what will happen when you disagree, that is abuse. Abuse is not a communication problem, and it does not get fixed by you being kinder, more patient, or more loving. Marriage experts, including the Gottmans and Sue Johnson, are clear that couples tools are not meant for relationships with ongoing violence or fear. Your safety, and your children's safety, comes first. You do not have to be sure, and you do not have to leave today, to reach out. Trained advocates can listen privately and help you think through options. If you are in danger right now, call 911.
If anything above sounds familiar, call or text the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (text START to 88788), or chat at thehotline.org. It's free, confidential, and open 24/7.
