Owning a Piece of It
Defensiveness feels like protecting yourself, but to your partner it sounds like 'the problem is you, not me.' It usually makes the fight longer. The Gottmans' antidote is simple to say and hard to do: take responsibility, even for a small part. You don't have to agree with everything or accept all the blame. You can say, 'You're right, I did forget to call, and I'm sorry.' That one sentence often lowers the temperature more than any argument could. Owning your part is not losing. It signals that you care more about the relationship than about winning the point, and it makes it much easier for your partner to own their part too. Try starting your next hard conversation with one honest sentence about your share, such as 'I know I was short with you this morning.' Keep it brief and don't add a 'but.' Then pause and let your partner respond before you say more.
In your next disagreement, find one true thing you can own and say it first.
